2018 season update

We did have some records to look back at in the 2018 season in Kengis. First of all we hit an all time low water record. With no more than two days with normal water level it was a low water season. Later on in the season the heat came to the north and for several weeks with +25 degrees and real summer weather our guests were swimming and not fishing in the river. It was some tough weeks, but when the water temperature finally dropped the low water and water temperature has made the fish stop at our water and we had an amazing august.

JUNE

We started off with a good week in the locals/media week. Fish were running and they were active.

The group landed 10 fish and lost some as well. Biggest fish was Kristian with a 115cm big baltic salmon. It was a promising start of the season and with thigh hopes we welcomed the first guests.

In the first week with our friends from Denmark the conditions were tough, the water was still going down and the wading routes were not like we have seen them before. But they fished hard and Jonas got rewarded. With two +90cm fish the week was perfect for him.

The week after was not easy, even lower water and not that many fish running made the conditions really tough. Only one fish was lost for the week, but guests were happy and that shows us real salmon spirit.

JULY

First week of July showed salmon fishing like we all know it. After a tough week the fish started to get a bit more active. Three fish landed and the group enjoyed the time by the river. Eating, looking at the fire and having a good time.

Then the heat started to come, the following week was a strange week. Conditions looked good and we saw plenty of fish running, but no interest in our flies at all. We had skilled fishermen that all fished hard, but in the end of the week we only lost a few fish.

The upcoming weeks was costa del Kengis. The sun was baking down on us and the fish got inactive. We saw them moving, but they did not want to strike our flies. We got the best of the situation and trained casting, fly tying and took a swim in the river.

AUGUST

The heat continued, but the grilse started to be more active and striked our flies.

Nany and Andrew managed to land 5 fish and lost some as well, including a big fish at the end of zone 3. It gave us a sign that the fish might start to be more active again.

When the temperature dropped in the water the fishing turned on. Our friends from Naamisuvanto spent a long weekend at our place and landed several fish. Sanna got her biggest baltic salmon ever and she was all smiles.

In the week after we hit another record at Kengis Bruk. +30 fish landed in one week and the same numbers were lost. The fish were everywhere and really active. It was a crazy week for our three guests.

At the end of the season we sadly lost a fishermen in our waters. We sent our thoughts to the family and friends.

Last week of the season ended really well. Frantz from Switzerland was top rod with eight fish landed and Aslak landed a 110cm crocodile. Great way to end the season.

Now we are looking forward to the 2019 season.

Best regards,
